Our summer day camp program has been growing year by year since we introduced the program in 2002. We now offer several sessions throughout the summer, and cater to all levels of student from 1st Grade thru 9th grade age groups.
The camps are organized by rider experience, and then groups are formed within the camp based on age. We never accept more than 8 students into any camp, which gives all of the campers the oppportunity for a concentrated learning experience. We always have atleast one instructor for every three campers, which provides a high level of attention and allows for the greatest amount of learning for the riders.
The focus of the camps is on correct english riding, basic barn management, safety and to teach riders to enjoy their horses in a responsible and respectful manner.
The young or beginner campers are taught from the ground up. Safely and correctly grooming and tacking the horses is a main focus, as are the correct basics for handling the horses (always with an instructor!) Basic riding skills are learned and improved on as the week progresses.
The more advanced students develop more refined riding technique and are given barn managenent tasks which develop the skills to care for their own horse. We encourage the expert campers to become excellent all around horsepeople, who will be an asset to the horse industry as adults.
All students participate in two small group lessons (3-4 riders) twice a day. We have a variety of horse related games to play, which encourage team work and learning. The campers have the chance to engage in friendly competition with riders from other camps, as we often host inter-camp horse shows and quiz competitions. Even the competitive side of the program stresses learning and teamwork over "winning." Along with learning we encourage the campers to have fun and to develop the love of horses which will foster a life long desire to ride. Many of our past campers have gone on to become employees here at WEC, or at other barns or Camp programs!
The friendly, mature staff at WEC will give your child the help that they need to learn and enjoy their camp experience. There is never an unsupervised moment in the barn, so parents can rest assured that their child is being given the best level of attention and instruction. Our days are very structured and while appropriate "breaks" are given, there is always something productive and educational for the campers to be doing. We have several instructors here who work professionally as grade school teachers or in early childhood education, so your child is getting enrichment that is rare in a day camp program!
We are lucky to not only to have excellent instructors and school horses but to also have a Registered Nurse, and First Aid/CPR certified instructors on the grounds should a mishap take place.
We really believe that the quality of our program speaks for itself. Most Campers come back yearly until they (sadly) age out!
We encourage early enrollment for all the Camps as they often fill a year or more in advance. Please don't hesitate to call or email for more information.
